Ilta-Sanomat reports (in Finnish) the appalling “meadow maintenance” measures of City of Helsinki at Malmi Airport. The nesting of the near-threatened, protected skylark was in full swing when Armageddon struck.

During the aviation use of Malmi Airport, only the immediate vicinity of the runways was kept shortish, and the large open meadows were cut annually near the end of summer after the birds’ nesting season was over. The meadows of Malmi Airport have evolved over many decades to be, for the time being, the largest site of value in the capital’s meadow network.
